The place was named after Fridrich Thomas, a well-known Moscow impresario of the early twentieth century. At this very place on Bolshaya Dmitrovka he opened the cabaret “Maxim”, entertaining the audience either with small performances, or with spirit rapping. This cabaret varied from a futuristic sitting-room to the bordello. The atmosphere and decorations of today’s “Mulatto Thomas” strongly recall those of “Maxim”. Tiny glass tables with blue candles, torchier-headed men figures, plushy pillows on the chairs, flower-painted walls… whatever the century on the outside, within is Mulatto Thomas.
